Akron's century-old Botzum Bros. Hardware acquired by North Carolina company - Crain's Cleveland Business

Akron's Botzum Bros. Hardware LLC, a family-owned business that's been around for more than a century, has been acquired by Cook & Boardman Group LLC, a specialty distributor of commercial doors and systems integration services.

Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Cook & Boardman announced the deal on Monday, Jan. 6, the same day the acquisition closed, according to a company spokesman. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Founded in 1892, Botzum Bros. serves the Northeast Ohio commercial construction and multifamily housing markets with architectural doors, frames, hardware and related products to the commercial construction and multifamily housing markets, according to a news release. The company also has an office in Bedford Heights, according to its website.

Under the deal, Botzum Bros. will continue to operate under its current name. Owner Al Hilkert will continue to manage the business, which will retain its 22 employees, the spokesman said, adding that Cook & Boardman would like to bolster the staff over time.

"Throughout our company's long history we have been known for delivering quality products and excellent customer service," Hilkert said in the release. "In Cook & Boardman, we found a common culture and passion for serving the industry. I am confident that our employees will thrive and the legacy of Botzum Bros. will be preserved."

Serving the multifamily and nonresidential markets — including the commercial, education, government, health care, office and hospitality sectors — Cook & Boardman distributes commercial doors, frames and hardware, electronic access control equipment and specialty products, the release said. It also provides systems integration services such as wireless networking and access control.

Cook & Boardman, which in 2018 was acquired by Connecticut private equity firm Littlejohn & Co., employs about 1,450 people at 49 locations in 17 states, the spokesman said.

Cook & Boardman has been on a buying spree since Littlejohn acquired it, with the Botzum Bros. deal being the sixth since 2018, the release noted. As Cook & Boardman acquires companies, it continues to run those entities under the local brands, with 17 brands falling under the company's umbrella, the spokesman said.

"We are excited to welcome Botzum Bros. to the Cook & Boardman family of companies," Cook & Boardman CEO Darrin Anderson said in a statement. "We don't take lightly that we are being entrusted with a fourth-generation family business, and we look forward to providing their employees with additional resources and expanded opportunities as we grow in this major market."
