Family-Run Hardware Store Closes After 30 Years In Stamford - Stamford, CT Patch

STAMFORD, CT — A family-run hardware store on High Ridge Road officially closed its doors late last month after serving customers in Stamford for nearly three decades. Keough's Paint and Hardware officially shut its doors on Dec. 22, with owner Bill Keough citing "declining sales and increasing business costs" as reasons for the closure.

The Stamford store opened in 1990, offering customers a wide selection of tools, paints and lawn and garden equipment among other items. Keough's also has a store located in Ridgefield, which dates back to the 1970's and remains open.

"The Stamford store was definitely different [from the Ridgefield store]," Keough said to Patch, "being a bigger store with two floors in a more densely populated area. There were challenges, and opportunities that were both positive and negative."

Despite its struggles, Keough said the store built up a "tremendous" customer base over the past 30 years, some of whom would come into the store once a day.

"I'll definitely miss the customers," Keough said, "and the team members that I worked with for many decades in some cases."

According to Keough, the key to attracting such loyal customers and employees is both stores' commitment to high-quality customer service.

"It can be cliche to say, but we believe in building personal relationships in terms of knowing customers by name and knowing what projects they've worked on in the past," Keough said. "Having team members who have been with us 10 to 30 years, customers began to know our team personally and counted on them to help them with their home projects."

He also tries to offer a variety of unique products and services, including a large selection of lawn and garden items and a rental service through which customers can rent items like lawnmowers, leaf blowers and even jackhammers.

"We probably have over 100 rental tools," Keough said, "so there's a wide variety."

Though the Stamford store is closed, Keough encourages customers to visit the Ridgefield store to fulfill their hardware needs. Customers who can't make the trip can also call the store for advice or inquiries.

The store is also working on implementing a "fairly regular delivery service" to Stamford, so customers can have grills or rental equipment brought from the store to their home.

"If [customers] have any need, they should call us," Keough said, "because we might still be able to fulfill their needs, whether they come up here or we come down there."

Customers can also check the Keough's website for further information and services.

Above all, Keough said he is thankful to everyone who supported the Stamford store over the past few decades and hopes to see them again in Ridgefield.

"Thank you for 30 years of business," Keough said. "We totally appreciate the support and are glad we could be there to help."
