How Your Child Can Get Involved On #GivingTuesdayKids - Forbes

Most know today as #GivingTuesday, a massive social movement created in 2012 with the simple idea of a day where people do good. Now this idea has been expanded to include kids with #GivingTuesdayKids. Led by 12-year-old Khloe Thompson and a team of youth ambassadors, #GivingTuesdayKids is all about encouraging young people to take action around the causes they care about most on GivingTuesday.

With the holidays upon us and parents constantly struggling to teach their child that the holidays are not just about getting, this is a perfect opportunity to demonstrate the power of giving back. Getting involved is easy. Kids can participate in a volunteer project, create their own or simply do an act of kindness. The goal is to prove that everyone has the power to make change in their communities and that everyone has something to give. Below is a simple guide for your child, and they can also find tools and resources on GivingTuesdayKids.org.

Identify Your Project Or Good Deed

This can be anything that your child cares about. Your child can do something big or small, alone or involve the community.

  • Help the environment by cleaning up a neighborhood playground, park or beach.
  • Start a toy drive to collect gifts for kids in need.
  • Help the homeless by preparing care kits and deliver them to homeless shelters
  • Support our servicemen and women by writing thank you messages to first responders
  • Start a Lemonade Stand: Lemonade Day is a national program that teaches youth how to start, own and operate their very own business. This year they are partnering with #GivingTuesdayKids to support and encourage entrepreneurship and philanthropy for kids. Visit their site for resources and tools to get started.
  • Address bullying by asking your school or after-school activity to set up a “stomp out bullying” discussion.
  • Find ways to reduce the amount of food that’s discarded at your school cafeteria. Ask your principal if you can create a “Share Table,” where students can return unopened, packaged lunch items to share with either fellow students who might be hungry, or to be donated to your local homeless shelter.
  • Join a local volunteer project in your area. GivingTuesday.org provides a way to search all activities happening in your area.

The ways to give are endless, and #GivingTuesdayKids provides ideas to fit any child.

Build Your Project

Your project can be designed in many ways and it depends on where you have it, and how many people are involved. Think about creating a way to record registrations if you have a large group participating; a facebook page is an easy way to do this. Also consider what you want to measure. If you are collecting trash in your neighborhood, can you weigh the trash bags? If writing letters to servicemen, keep a count of how many you and your volunteers send out.

Spread The Word

Register Your Project With GivingTuesdayKids to let them know about all the good you’re doing. Use social media, your schools website, local newspapers and posters in your school lobby or cafeteria to let your friends know what you’re doing and what cause you’re supporting.

Give Back!

Rally all your friends and family and get started. Have fun, be safe and keep everyone engaged and excited by reminding them of who you are helping and all the good you’re doing. Take plenty of photos of the volunteers and participants to document your project.

Wrap Up

When you’re done with your event, take a moment to reflect with the others on what you did. Talk about who you helped, and what impact your activity will make on that community. Spread your story by posting photos on social media using #GivingTuesdayKids and #GivingTuesday. Additionally you can share your story at GivingTuesdayKids by uploading your photos and writing about your experience.

Keep It Going.

While #GivingTuesday and #GivingTuesdayKids are phenominal movements to get everyone involved, it doesn’t matter what day of the week it is. You can encourage your kids to do good everyday, whether it’s an organized event like a coat drive or a simple act of kindness to a classmate.
